The Lord Mayor’s Show in London had a local flavour this year as Kellswater Band travelled from the Borough to take part in the famous spectacle which is watched by half a million people on the streets of London and broadcast live by the BBC.

The parade itself is 3 miles long and has around 6000 participants, including Military bands, the armed services, floats and dancers.

The procession began at The Mansion House went past St Paul’s Cathedral and along Fleet St to the Royal Courts of Justice, after a short break for lunch the pageant set off again to take the new Lord Mayor back to the Mansion House.

Kellswater Band wins World Championship Flute Contest PDF Print E-mail

Kellswater Flute Band returned home from the North of Ireland Bands’ Association Contest in Armagh with the premier award in flute band competitions, the Grade 1 World Championship Flute title.  Performing the test piece “The Three-Cornered Hat” arranged for flutes by David Heaney, Kellswater with conductor Carolyn Watson were competing against five other top class flute bands in their section, all the bands impressing the adjudicator Mr. Donald Finlayson from Scotland, who studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

Kellswater were awarded the NIBA Cup, £200 and two BBC Radio Ulster Broadcasts, in addition Kellswater’s  piccolo player, Shannon Mc Kay won the Jim Stain Memorial Cup for the best piccolo in the section, a remarkable honor for such a technically demanding piece of music. The special adjudicator’s award for the best overall performance of the day was also given to Kellswater.

COUNCIL SUPPORT KELLSWATER TRIP TO GIBRALTAR PDF Print E-mail

Ballymena Borough Council have widely supported Kellswater Flute Band in their proposal for a cultural trip to Gibraltar in the summer of 2008.

At the recent Cultural Services Committee meeting, two representatives from the band gave members a presentation on the history of the band, their success and why they want to go to Gibraltar.

KELLSWATER BAND IN FINE FORM AT ANNUAL SPRING CONTEST IN SCOTLAND PDF Print E-mail

Kellswater Flute Band returned from Troon last weekend where they were competing against the cream of Scottish and Northern Irish Flute Bands in the Scottish Amateur Flute Band Association Contest.

Kellswater secured five trophies last year, to repeat that memorable achievement seemed a mammoth task for the local band, but unbelievably they returned with another collection of silverware winning the Open March, Best Percussion and Best Entertainment Sections and also gaining third place in the Grade 1 Section behind former World Champions Ballygowan and Scottish Champions, Carluke Primrose.

KELLSWATER BAND’S 60th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS OFF TO A FLYING START PDF Print E-mail

Kellswater Flute Band took part in the Ninetieth Northern Ireland Band’s Association Championship of Ireland Contest recently, this year the venue was moved from the Ulster Hall to the Market Place Theatre Armagh, due to extensive renovation work being carried out at the Belfast venue.

Competing in the Grade 2 Section with four bands entered, Kellswater were awarded first place with 95 points by adjudicator Hughina Naylor from Scotland. The prize for the best interpretation of the set test piece - Semiramide was also awarded to their conductor Glen Houston.

Since moving up to the Grade 2 Section, Kellswater have secured two consecutive second places in the NIBA Contest in 2005 and 2006, missing out last year by just one point to Cahard Flute Band. However, as the local outfit begin a series of events to celebrate their 60th Anniversary, they delivered a winning performance to bring the silverware back to Ballymena.
